He's drawn some of the more well known beholder artworks- if you google 'beholder' many of the images that pop up are his.
Stephen Silver was at comicon as well. I got to look at some of the stuff at his booth and it just blew me away. He did character designs for many mainstream cartoons, and his drawings were just amazing. I loved it!

I absolutely adore how expressive and colorful his stuff was. Delicious!
There were also some less than impressive artsits there. I got a chance to look at Frank Cho's artbooks, and the one thing that stood out was that every woman he draws looks exactly the same. He's default drawing the same person, over and over again, in different poses with different hair styles.

I can spot so many anatomical errors in his stuff. It's pretty scary. I feel bad bashing on Frank Cho, considering he was a guest of honor and since he's worked in the comic industry for so long and can render things a hell of a lot better than I can. Still, I gotta say I'm grateful for life drawing and the education I'm getting.
I didn't look at his artbooks at Comic Con, but from the work I've seen from Frank Cho in the past I've got to disagree with your opinion of him. I've seen him do some amazing work, both for Liberty Meadows and on his own. Sure, his girls might look similar, but that's because they're all hot comic book type girls. He's hitting a certain demographic. But I think his anatomy is pretty solid. No one's perfect, but I think he's definitely up there.

ReplyDeleteHey, opinions are awesome Kieran. I gotta say I respectfully disagree with you though, although I can see where you're coming from. I don't mind anatomical exaggeration in comic books for cheesy sex appeal goodness, but rather it's his feet and how he can't seem to foreshorten well enough to pull of the poses he wants to draw. Look at the feet in the above picture; he draws a lot of feet like that and it weird me out. Almost all of the women in his art book had poor foreshortening as well as basically the same body. I'm not art expert and I'm still quite the n00b so maybe I'm off my rocker.
ReplyDeleteFor his credit, he had a lot of great stuff going for him too, I loved his compositions! They were quite tasty. He really knows how to make a powerful composition.
